To say I’ve always wanted to study or work in the design or creative field would be a lie as I’ve always loved a variety of things. This fact has been reflected in the subjects I took during my time in high school; from sciences to art history, Spanish to graphics and calculus to art. Nonetheless, my decision to study Design was not unexpected. Here’s why.
Design is an ever-changing field
The world is constantly changing so what designers design and with what tools is constantly changing too. I like that because it means I can constantly try new things and see exactly what I enjoy and get inspired by.
Design fits into many different industries
As Deb Polson (personal communication, February 26, 2020) explained to our Design cohort, all industries now need designers to create a multitude of things for them. Things like products, services, communications and much more. That’s really appealing to me because, like I mentioned in the above point, it would allow me to apply my skills to many different areas and hopefully make some sort of positive impact in the world.
Always learning with design
Basically to sum up my first two points, the ever-changing nature of design and its application to a multitude of fields makes for a profession where I can’t imagine ever knowing all or even the majority of what comes under it. And I see it as, most likely, never doing the same thing more than a handful of times which is exciting in itself.
Now that I am here studying this programme, I can see myself gaining some really valuable teachings to support me on my future pathways. In particular, I am interested in disciplines such as spatial design, service design and user experience design. I can envision these areas of design to complement the other half of my conjoint degree, Health Sciences.
Kreitzer, M. J.(n.d.) explains in relation to health care design, our environments have a huge impact on us and our well-being. I agree with this which is why I think spatial design is such an important type of design, and not just in places like hospitals. This area of design is something I’d like to work in to improve how spaces work, both in efficient functionality and sustainable design as well as to create more meaningful environments that have an impact on an invisible level.
A space that inspires me is the interior of the famous La Sagrada Família designed by Antoni Gaudí. The multi-purpose use of the columns to create structural support and also as aesthetic interest is a very clever and impressive use of space.

I'd like to one day design spaces, services and user experiences that have more deeper intentions than just functionality and I think Antoni Gaudí's designs will continue to be a huge inspiration for me. Although, maybe at a smaller scale!
