Lamp

DES100 Assignment 2

Design Brief

The design brief for this project was to design a lamp for a friend or family member.

Target User

My target user is my 13 year old sister, Kaashvi. Kaashvi loves art, is an avid reader, keeps plants in her room and enjoys doing yoga. Before the interview, I knew that she would like a lamp that fits her personality and interests better. The mood board I created for her included soft colours and nature as well as the activities she enjoys doing. From the interview, I learnt that her main requirements for the lamp were an adjustable light, easy to function and fits on her bedside table well.

So my design brief was to design a lamp for my younger sister that would successfully solve the issues bought up in the interview.

Design Statement

Kaashvi needs a lamp that will fit in her chosen location and that can be successfully used for relaxing activities such as reading, yoga and drawing before bed. I have found that my client has many things that she likes keeping close to bed which has resulted in a filled bedside table. This has made her not as keen as she used to be to do activities such as reading, yoga and drawing before bed because the clutter on her table doesn't allow much room for storing her books and drawing supplies. Similarly, her current light doesn't make her feel relaxed which is an important thing for doing yoga

So, I found that Kaashvi needs a way to light her room before bed but her bedside table is always cluttered which doesn’t allow much room for a suitable lamp that fulfills her needs.

Prototypes and their Strengths

I made the initial prototype using spare cardboard and paper in order to test out the size and shape of the design in my client's room.

I found that overall, the prototype fit the bedside table well apart from a few adjustments to the dimensions.

My client liked the shape of the prototype and the fact that the knob was easy to reach.

She was able to see that her table would become more clutter-free as she would have a space to store her things.

How I made the prototype

The next prototype I made was a Fusion 360 model. Making the model digitally allowed both me and my client to get a proper understanding of the visuals of the prototype. After some ideation I decided to colour the model blue with flower motifs to both match my client's room and interests. I think this model was very valuable for prototyping as I could make changes very easily to it i.e. for measurements or colours.

Representation of possible circuit

I created a potential circuit for the lamp on tinkercad to get an idea of what electrics I would need. The LED in that diagram would ideally be replaced by a LED board to get enough brightness to light up a room.

I think on a whole, the lamp I prototyped for my sister fulfilled the needs that she had and allowed her and me to see the visuals on a more authentic level.

However, more refinements can still be made to create a more polished and clear design. If I were to continue the process of designing this lamp I would first work out how the circuit would a) fully work and b) how it will be placed inside the lamp.

I would also try to further refine the flower motifs on the design as well as the form whole to create a more elegant design.
