"A lightning flash:

between the forest trees

I have seen water"

Shiki, M. (n.d.). A lightning flash. MyPoeticSide.

Storyboard

The story follows Emily, a digital illustrator, who loses her interview with her dream company due to oversleeping and missing the train. Disappointed she sits in a cafe and someone, Amanda, happens to spot her portfolio work leading Amanda to invite Emily to join her studio. They work on a short film that gets played for many to see. As the story progresses, the weather changes from gloomy, rainy to brighter, sunnier weather as a nod to the original Haiku that inspired this poster.

Process:

I first began by sketching some ideas for a story following the theme of a blessing disguised as a curse.

Then I drew up my story and coloured in using water colour as it was a quick method to add depth. However, I found that the multiple colours didn't create a cohesive look in the storyboard so I decided to adjust it digitally to black and white.

Then I correctly ordered my frames and added details to better illustrate my story in Adobe Illustrator. For example in frame 7, I included a mini text conversation between the main character and a friend in order to communicate the event that had happened.

I sandwiched my storyboard between two frames with the window to show the change that had occurred and how what seemed like a negative experience at first turned in to a very positive one for the main character.
