Inspirations: A Design I Like

Now there are many designs that I like, however for this blog I’ll be discussing movie and TV show streaming websites. In particular, Netflix.
Netflix was founded in 1997, originally being a DVD rental service but started offering online streaming options for some of its media in 2007 (Hosch, 2020). By 2016, the streaming service was being offered and used in 190 countries (Hosch, 2020).

My family has been subscribed to Netflix for 4 years and we have really enjoyed its convenience and flexibility. The reason I like this service so much is because for $11.99 (NZD) a month (Netflix, 2020) one can access thousands of shows, movies and documentaries which in my opinion is far better than paying $25.99 (NZD) for TV subscriptions such as SKY (SKY, 2020). Although you don’t get the live experience, which is important for some users, applications such as Netflix Party have made it so you can stream media at the same time as friends and family from around the world. There is also a download feature on some media on Netflix which allows viewers to watch movies and shows offline, this shows they’ve kept the user in mind as there isn’t always internet connection available but users are still able to access content from anywhere. As well as this, I personally really like the feature of having multiple profiles for each person using an account. It allows us to keep track of our watch histories and get individual content recommendations too. The Design Council (n.d.) explains “service design is all about making the services we use usable, easy and desirable.” (page 4) which in my opinion, Netflix has done very well.
The only improvement I think Netflix could make is having a more comprehensive review feature. For example, a five star rating for users to make and see the average rating from other users. And perhaps even an option to write a review. As a user, I think it will make it much more convenient to see the feedback on TV Shows and movies rather than having to manually search up their ratings and reviews on Google.
