"A lightning flash:

between the forest trees

I have seen water"

Shiki, M. (n.d.). A lightning flash. MyPoeticSide.

Process:

I started off by listing some key themes in the haiku from which I choose "change", "contrast" and "source" to illustrate. I came up with three images for each one.

This is the image I choose for the theme of "source".

I then choose to develop this design further by applying more Gestalt principles of design. This was done by the repetition of overlapping circles to create a sense of proximity. I also used multiple lines emerging from the circles rather than a different form because lines appear to have no end much like water which is the thing being sourced in Shiki's haiku.

Then I drew up an outline of my chosen design using a compass and ruler. My initial idea was to allow the circles to combine as one form but to achieve repetition, I decided to outline them with white to create a sense of overlapping.
